The 4-door sedan can be compared in size and status with the BMW 1800. In September of 1963 the prototype (GLAS 1500 with a 70 Hp-motor) was introduced to the public at the Frankfurt IAA.
Frua in Italy designed the car. The 1700 was produced between September 1964 until the fall of 1967, the 1700 TS from July 1965 also until the fall of 1967.
However this was not the end of this body design. BMW South Africa fitted the BMW 4-cylinder M 10 motor and sold it in its home marked as a BMW 1800 SA and BMW 2000 SA for several years to come.
A total of 13,789 cars were built of this type. The cars were priced between US$2,210 (from September 1965: US$ 2,310) for the GLAS 1700 and US$2,440 for the GLAS 1700 TS. (look also at www.pietro-frua.de)
