The Isar was the company's first attempt of to build a "regular size" automobile. The prototype was introduced at the IAA in September 1957. This prototype was shown with front wheel drive, a concept, which was later abandoned.
From the beginning this model was called the "Large Goggomobil". Only since 1959 in conjunction with the introduction of the station wagon model was the name changed to "Isar". Since August of the same year, also the first design changes appeared. There was a larger rear window, larger rear lights, a higher roofline and doubled-up bumpers.
A total of 86,943 "Isars" were produced between 1958 and 1965 of which 14,275 cars were the station wagon models. By far most models used the 700cc motor. The prices in Germany were between US$1,080 and US$1,240.
